Mrs Hinch fans hail 29p trick for banishing washing machine drawer mould

Apr 08, 2024Apr 08, 2024

A woman was left baffled when her washing machine drawer was mouldy after only a couple of uses - but some shared their natural hacks to banish the mould and keep it from reoccurring

Keeping your washing machine clean is really important - it is keeping your clothes nice and fresh after all. But sometimes, naturally, it can get a little bit mouldy, so it's key that you clean it as soon as you notice it, rather than allowing it to get worse and worse.

One woman took to the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips Facebook group to share that she needed some help when it came to cleaning her washing machine drawer, asking for people's best tips, as it had only been a couple of washes since she'd given it a deep clean - and it looked gross.

She wrote: "I cleaned this two weeks and I've done a few wash loads since and it's looking like this!", followed by a shrugging shoulders emoji.

"Can anyone help or suggest why this has happened?", the woman asked.

The comments were filled with people reassuring her that it was totally normal, offering their top tips for making sure it doesn't come back again, explaining how to clean it if it does.

One woman offered: "It's normal it happens to everyone. After you wash open the drawer to let the air circulate. I also keep my door open so you don't get the fusty smell too. Hope you get it sorted."

Another recommended their top tip for banishing mould with a kitchen cupboard staple. They wrote: "Take it out and put it in the dishwasher. If not give a good scrub with a toothbrush. White vinegar sounds like a good idea. Might prevent this from happening again."

Vinegar can be purchased from some supermarkets for as little as 29p.

Someone also recommended cleaning after every wash to ensure the drawer can't get mouldy.

Others also said that leaving it open when not in use helped them to banish the mould, and stop it from coming back.
